Partials and Dentures
At Posh Dental, our first goal is to help our patients retain their natural teeth. Sometimes, this is not an option. When a patient is missing teeth, then we will want to create a plan to keep your bite healthy and maintain the health of your remaining teeth. Dr. Gabriel is happy to evaluate your oral health and together, create a dental plan that will meet your needs. If you are missing one, several, or all of your teeth, a partial denture or a full denture, can help you maintain a healthy mouth.
Why are missing teeth a problem?
There are some very obvious and some less obvious reasons why missing teeth are a problem. A patient may be able to understand why missing teeth is problematic to their aesthetics, or to their ability to chew certain foods. What may be less understood is how missing teeth can affect your bite when remaining teeth shift, or what happens to the bone that supports your teeth when it is not stimulated through use. All of these, aesthetics, the ability to chew, teeth shifting, and the loss of bone mass, can create a large problem with very long, painful and expensive consequences.
We can reduce the damage and increase your confidence with the creation of a customized partial denture or full denture.
What is a partial denture?
A partial denture is different from a dental bridge, in that it is removable. A partial denture is designed to place false teeth where natural teeth are missing, using a clasp system. By placing false teeth, you can restore your look, assist in chewing the foods you love, and fill the space to stop teeth from shifting. Unfortunately, the bone mass will still decrease in size over time because the bone is not being stimulated by the pressure of the tooth’s root making contact with the bone, but a partial is much more beneficial than missing teeth.
What is a full denture?
As the name suggests, a full denture is designed for patients who are missing all of their teeth on either their upper or lower arch. A full denture can be a significant life change. Patients will regain some chewing function when all was lost, and they will have increased aesthetics following the loss of their natural teeth. There will be an adjustment time to grow used to your dentures, you will want to practice your speech and ability to chew, and you will need to be cautious of the foods that you eat.
How can I improve my function with partial or full dentures?
You can help your dentures work, feel and act much more like your natural teeth by placing an anchor to keep them in place. Known as a dental implant, a titanium rod is placed into your jawbone to anchor your partial or full denture device. This anchor will significantly increase your comfort level and your use of your dental appliance. Dental implants can help keep your bone robust, while permanently stabilizing your denture. Dr. Gabriel is happy to review the process of dental implants with you, helping you look and feel more like your younger self.
