Gum Disease Therapy

Woman in need of gum disease treatment in Chandler, AZ.Gum disease is caused by the bacteria found in plaque and tartar. In response to bacteria, your body will produce substances that inflame and damage your gum tissue, ligaments, and alveolar bone. Over time, your gums will become swollen, red, and easily bleed. These are signs of gingivitis, the preliminary stage of gum disease.

As the disease progresses, your gums will begin to recede. Deep periodontal pockets begin to form between the tooth and gum, leaving more space for the infection to spread and plaque to build. If left untreated, you will develop periodontitis, a serious form of gum disease. Your ligaments and bone will begin to suffer, and ultimately, the structures that support your teeth will fail. This can lead to surgical intervention or tooth loss.

Luckily, gum disease is easily preventable. At Posh Dental, we offer preventative and restorative treatments to keep your gums healthy, and your teeth intact.

Professional Cleanings

Generally speaking, you should schedule a professional cleaning twice a year. During a professional cleaning, our dental hygienist will remove the plaque and tartar build-up on the surfaces of the tooth above and below the gum line. If we notice any preliminary signs of gum disease, we may suggest more frequent cleanings, and provide instructions for proper home care. Although professional cleanings are not a treatment for active gum disease, they are an important preventive measure that can halt the progression of the disease.

Scaling and Root Planing

Also known as a “deep cleaning,” scaling and root planing is a nonsurgical procedure used to combat dental disease before the damage becomes irreversible. During the procedure, our hygienist will use an ultrasonic scaler to scrape away rough spots of plaque and tartar. An ultrasonic scaler produces sonic waves that, when combined with a cleaning solution, produce microscopic bubbles. These bubbles implode on the surface of your tooth, breaking up tartar and plaque while eliminating bacterial microbes. The root of the tooth is also made smooth using the same technique. Rough spots and bacteria are eliminated to reduce the depth of your periodontal pockets, and allow the gums to securely hug the tooth again. This can also prevent future growth of bacteria and plaque below the surface of the gum.

Severe Cases of Gum Disease

Severe cases of gum disease may require flap surgery, or bone and soft tissue grafts. Dr. Gabriel will refer you to a specialist who can provide services beyond nonsurgical treatment. The point of surgical intervention is to reduce periodontal pockets and reinforce your bone and tissue structure.

Maintaining Your Periodontal Heath

Patients who have experienced gum disease should be vigilant about their oral hygiene. Personal oral care is the biggest weapon you have to combat gum disease. Make sure you understand and utilize proper flossing and brushing methods. Patients who smoke or use tobacco products are much more likely to develop gum disease or hinder the healing process. Be sure to schedule regular visits and receive professional cleanings. Dr. Gabriel can answer any questions or concerns you may have about your periodontal health.
