Children's Dentistry Chandler, AZ
Pediatric dentistry is an important part of your child’s overall health. At Posh Dental, our goal is to help you and your family maintain a beautiful smile, and avoid the pitfalls of poor oral hygiene. Dr. Gabriel strives to establish a strong dental foundation for your child through education, preventative measures, and comfortable office visits.
The Importance of Pediatric Dentistry
Good oral hygiene begins with education. We want parents to know that an oral hygiene regimen should be implemented as early as infancy. During the first six months, be sure to wipe down gums with gauze or a wet washcloth, especially after feedings. Once the teeth begin to erupt, make sure to keep them clean using a specialized toothbrush recommended by the American Dental Association (ADA).
Some parents make the mistake of putting an infant to bed with a bottle that contains milk or juice. This can lead to a serious condition known as baby bottle tooth decay. Long exposure to liquids that contain sugars can severely decay the primary (baby) teeth. If left untreated, decay can even be transferred below the gums to the permanent teeth. These complications can be avoided with proper hygiene techniques and regular office visits.
Your Child’s First Visit
According to the ADA, a child should visit a dentist by their first birthday, or when their primary teeth begin to erupt. Your child’s first visit is observational and educational. Dr. Gabriel will perform a comprehensive exam and look for signs of potential tooth decay or gum disease. We can address unique needs or conditions before serious problems arise. Be sure to ask questions and voice any concerns. You can expect to discuss:

Oral habits like thumb sucking and pacifier use
|
• |
The importance of diet
|

How to care for their teeth

The most important part of the first visit is creating a welcoming and comfortable experience. At Posh Dental, we want our office to feel like a “dental home.” We find it’s best to schedule an appointment in the morning when the child is fed and well-rested. It may be helpful to bring a snack. Positive reinforcement is also key. Avoid using words that may have negative connotations, and try not to exhibit any signs of anxiety.
As your child grows older, it is important to schedule regular visits. We know it can be difficult to excite a younger child about oral health, but try to stay positive and consistent. Never threaten a visit as a form of punishment. Some parents find it helpful to turn an office visit into an adventure or game.
Preventive Dentistry for Children
A large part of children’s dentistry is preventative. During regular visits, our dental hygienist will perform a gentle, but effective cleaning to remove plaque and tartar. The goal is to prevent gum disease and cavities before the damage becomes irreversible. Fluoride treatments and dental sealants are another way we can strengthen enamel, and protect teeth from acidic bacteria.
