How Composite Bonding Works
The compound we use for composite bonding is the same material that we use to fill cavities; it is a blend of quartz and resin that have been mixed. In the past, the composite was not considered a very durable product, but the blend that is used today is stronger and longer lasting, making it a great material to use to repair your teeth.
Sometimes referred to as tooth bonding, Dr. Gabriel can apply the composite material to fill chips and fractures, we can even close in gaps and make stained teeth appear whiter. This simple cosmetic touchup can vastly improve the look of your smile.

During your dental appointment, Dr. Gabriel will review your options with you. If you decide that composite bonding is right for you we can take care of it immediately during the same appointment. Veneers and Crowns require additional steps that may require multiple appointments, but composite can be applied with no notice. Patients rarely require pain relief for dental bonding, there should be very little discomfort. Dr. Gabriel will begin with cleaning the area, removing any possible decay and ensuring that harmful bacteria is removed. The tooth may require some reshaping, but very little tooth would need to be removed since composite will adhere to the tooth enamel, unlike amalgam. The tooth enamel is etched or roughened to create more surface area for the composite to make contact with and then a conditioner is applied to assist in the adhesion. The composite material is then mixed with resin and color matched to best fit your natural tooth color. The composite material is applied, shaped, and cured with a specialized blue light. By the time you are ready to leave the composite material is already hard and ready to use.
In less than one hour, you can have a dramatically improved smile. Composite bonding is not a permanent solution, it will not last as long as dental veneers or a dental crown, but many patients have found that composite bonding is lasting several years, some even up to ten years without incident. With proper care, including excluding chewing on ice or hard candies, you can enjoy the look of composite bonding for many years. |
