Ultrasonic Scaler

Ultrasonic scaler held in hygienists's hand at dentist office in Chandler, AZ.An ultrasonic scaler can help you keep your teeth healthier, longer. Most of our adult patients benefit from the use of an ultrasonic scaler during their regular dental cleaning. This advanced dental tool will help us remove decay-causing bacteria, reducing the likelihood of infection and keep your gums healthy and strong. At Posh Dental, our team, including our professional hygienist under the direction of Dr. Gabriel work to both eliminate and prevent dental disease.

Sometimes referred to as a deep cleaning, when a patient has hardened tartar or calculus material below the gum line, removing the material with the ultrasonic scaler may be their best option. Tartar or calculus that has been allowed to dip below the gum line will lead to gum disease.

Gum disease is a very common dental disorder, with most patients suffering from the earliest stage known as gingivitis. Gingivitis is a condition that comes from not brushing or flossing as effectively as you could. We brush and floss twice a day to remove food debris and plaque from our teeth. Plaque is a naturally made blend of food and saliva found in our mouths. It will settle along the gum line and between our teeth. Plaque is filled with decay-causing bacteria, and if it is not promptly removed, it will dry and harden into a material known in dentistry as tartar or calculus.

Once the material is hardened, it is difficult to remove, and should only be removed by a hygienist, so the enamel is not damaged. As this bacteria filled material remains on your teeth, and below the gum line, it will cause a bacterial infection. Patients who suffer from gum disease for long periods of time will find that they suffer from other health issues, this is because your body is continuously fighting a bacterial infection. We can remove the source of the infected and help restore your gums to health with an ultrasonic scaler.

How does an ultrasonic scaler work?

When it comes to having your teeth cleaned, the Ultrasonic Scaler can’t be matched in power or speed. An ultrasonic scaler is designed to remove plaque safely and hardened tartar or calculus from your teeth and below the gum line, a procedure also known as root debridement. This tool using a rapidly vibrating tip to chip away at the hardened bacteria filled material while also blasting high pressured oxygenated bubbles at your teeth.

The effects are somewhat similar in concept to a pressure washer but specifically designed for your teeth. As the ultrasonic scaler passes over your teeth and gums, it will remove hardened plaque buildup, and teeth often visibly appear cleaner and whiter following the procedure.

Though pain relief is not necessary when using an ultrasonic scaler, some patients may find this process to be uncomfortable. We are happy to apply a local anesthetic when needed. Though uncomfortable, choosing to not remove this bacteria filled material can lead to a more severe condition known as periodontitis. Periodontitis is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults. We want to help our patients keep their teeth, the longer, the better.
