Dental Crowns

A crown is a custom cap that covers a damaged tooth and restores its shape, strength and appearance. When a tooth has too little healthy structure left for a filling to hold — after a large fracture, deep decay, or a root canal — a crown is what keeps that tooth in service instead of losing it.

How a crown is made

Crowns at Posh are made by a local lab technician we work with closely, and the process takes two visits.

At the first visit, Dr. Groberg removes the decay or damaged structure and shapes the tooth so a crown can seat over it properly. We take a digital scan and send it to the lab with detailed notes on shade, contour and bite. You leave wearing a temporary crown that protects the tooth and lets you eat and speak normally.

At the second visit, the finished crown is tried in, checked against your bite, adjusted if needed, and cemented in place.

Why we use a lab

Sending crowns to a skilled technician rather than milling them chairside buys something worth the extra visit: a person who does nothing but build restorations, matching the shade and translucency of your surrounding teeth by hand. For front teeth especially, that craftsmanship is the difference between a crown that disappears and one you notice.

We expect to bring in-house same-day crown technology back in the future. For now, the lab route is the one that produces the better result, and we would rather be straight with you about which we offer.

Caring for a crown

A crown is brushed and flossed like any other tooth, and the margin where it meets the gum deserves particular attention — that junction is where decay can start underneath. With good hygiene and regular visits, a well-made crown lasts many years.
